Kaitlin and Daniel do some coastal driving and Ano Nuevo State Beach: 26 May 2009 (part II).

We were delighted to find that taking the 1 from Monterey to San Francisco would take only marginally longer than more efficient but much less scenic routes, so we set off along the coast.

The coastal pines provided a brilliant contrast to the cliffs and beaches that we passed.

We stopped briefly at Wilder Ranch State Park. It was pretty, but pretty deserted.

The park people really cared about their snakes.

We wanted to see the elephant seals that frequent Año Nuevo State Beach, but the path to their section of coast was closed. The beach was stunning, though, so we sat on some driftwood and ate our picnic dinner while watching a guy take pictures and speculating about what he was taking them for.

We ran around the dunes and enjoyed the wind.

Daniel said he wanted to scare the seagulls, and I knew it would make for fantastic pictures, so we waited until the photographer guy left.

Daniel was initially unsure about fording the river.

But he made it. I knew he would.

It was very Alfred Hitchcock. I loved it.

The birds weren't scarred for life. They settled down fairly quickly. The photographer continued to take pictures up at the parking lot, and I can only imagine what he thought of us. We thought he was hilarious.

Wildflowers were everywhere right up to the sand.

There was just so much to see as we drove.

Some of that rich NorCal soil.

We watched the sunset as we neared Pacifica, and felt a little spoiled because it looked just like what we see every day at Point Loma.

And then I got to drive the Golden Gate Bridge! It was most exciting the first time, because we would drive over it and back every time we went into the city.

We drove into Novato and I got to meet more of Daniel's family before turning in for the night.
